The mini gastric bypass operation is a newer and less extensive form of the more common gastric bypass (stomach stapling) which is starting to become popular with some patients who want a quicker procedure and speedier recovery time.
It is very similar to the traditional Roux-en-Y procedure although it is less extensive. This new procedure was devised by a professor of surgery at the University of North Carolina in the USA.
The operation usually takes only 30 minutes, the hospital stay is less than 24 hours, patients can experience minimal pain and some surgeons state it can be easily reversed or revised.
In spite of its increasing popularity the mini gastric bypass has not yet been proven to be an effective procedure and Vita Clinics is still exploring published research relating to its use, especially around longer term weight loss and complications.
