How long will my hospital stay be after weight loss surgery?

Am I eligible for weight loss surgery?

Obesity/weight loss surgery can be a life changing experience & definitely should not be entered into lightly.

Permanent changes to your lifestyle will need to be made in order to get the maximum benefits from this type of surgery. This will include definite changes to your lifestyle which will include a whole new way of eating, ensuring you take daily nutritional supplementation and make changes to your overall eating behaviour.

As a result of this you will find that at Vita Clinics we follow strict criteria regarding each person’s suitability for weight loss surgery.

In the UK anyone considering any form of weight loss surgery or obesity surgery such as a gastric bypass or gastric band has to fulfil the criteria set out by The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) as follows:-

  • You are classed as obese i.e. you have a BMI of 35 or 40 kg/m2 (Variations on this include a lower BMI but with an obesity-related illness such as Type 2 diabetes.)
  • You are suffering from an obesity related illness; are at high risk of developing an obesity-related illness or are suffering from a life threatening condition
  • You are aged 18 to 65
  • You have tried and failed with all other forms of weight loss treatments including diet, exercise and weight loss supplementation
  • You are committed to changing your current lifestyle and are prepared to attend regular follow up sessions

At Vita Clinics all our patients are assessed individually to ensure they meet these guidelines.

It is essential you have realistic expectations about weight loss surgery and although it is very effective and can result in achieving you losing a high percentage of your excess weight it is by no means a 'quick fix' and you will also need to include a complete lifestyle change for tackling your obesity, which will last for the rest of your life.  Although this is a long term process our multi-disciplinary team at Vita Clinics which include a surgeon, dietician, psychologist, physician and specialist bariatric nurse are there to provide support and guidance throughout your weight loss journey right through from the initial consultation right through to your aftercare following surgery.

This means regular follow up sessions with our team at Vita Clinics to ensure that everything is going well and that your weight loss is progressing. If you need any further support, advice or have any questions at all your team at Vita Clinics will help by giving the support you need.
