Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Forget Strictly Come Dancing! To help celebrate National Obesity Week, on Thursday 5th November, staff and patients at The Vita Clinics’ Birmingham Weight Management Clinic helped Bonfire night go with a bang by launching into a variety of different activities under the banner of ’shake, rattle and roll’!

Never before have the staff been so active (!) and the patients definately felt that exercise could be great fun. Patients after bariatric surgery procedures such as gastric bypass and gastric band, as well as patients particpating in Vita Clinics’ Medical Weight Management programme, wanted to celebrate the fact that they had lost significant weight and felt healthier than they had done in years.

They aimed to row a total of 4 miles in relays. It takes the Oxford and Cambridge crews about 17 minutes to complete the 4 miles from Putney to Mortlake – everyone felt they could take a little longer for our 4 mile challenge (we didn’t want the Cambridge and Oxford crews to feel too threatened!).

Several patients got stuck in with gusto, having successfully undergone weight loss surgery such as gastric bypass and gastric band earlier in the year, and now being several stone lighter. The river was a bit choppy in places and the weather not too good on occasion…

Some of the staff felt the current was against them, with one or two claiming they were rowing against the tide, and Carol, Bariatric Nurse Specialist, claiming that she’d only managed to “row up the cut” (a Walsall phrase we think).

Great fun was had by all and we estimate that well over 1,500 calories were burned.

For most of the participants this was the first time they had used a rower and several said they enjoyed it so much they would seriously contemplate investing in one to help them get fitter and become more active. To found out some enjoyable and easy steps for activity and exercise click here.

We haven’t yet decided about charging for training the Oxford or Cambridge crews…. our expert technique comes at a price!

National Obesity Week – 20 Northern Ireland obesity surgery patients celebrate combined 83 stone weight loss in 8 months!

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Vita Clinics’ Belfast weight management clinic was filled with successful patients today celebrating their new lives following Gastric Bypass surgery having lost a total of 83 stone (or 525 Kg) since their weight loss surgery 8 months ago.

The patients wanted to celebrate their success as part of Vita Clinics’ National Obesity Week campaign in support of the National Obesity Forum. Vita Clinics’ Bariatric Dietician Catherine Towers said that the patients had all battled long and hard to lose weight before surgery with no success, but that having the surgery had given them a new lease of life and the impetus to make the necessary life-long changes.

Several of the patients are now working again after being unable to work for years due to their excess weight and accompanying ill health. One lady was being put forward for IVF now after being refused for several years on the grounds of her weight and the fact that her obesity had prevented her having periods.

Some of the patients brought along clothes that they had worn before their gastric bypass operations to demonstrate their miraculous weight loss.

Perhaps the most wonderful aspect was the fact that all of those patients who has suffered with either high blood pressure (hypertension) or type 2 Diabetes due to their obesity had now stopped taking medications for these illnesses and their symptoms had disappeared.

Whilst bariatric surgery such as gastric band or gastric bypass might not be right for all morbidly obese people, the experiences of these patients testifies to the incredible difference both the surgery and good aftercare can make.

National Obesity Week – Walsall Husband & Wife shed 90kg of spare tyres after gastric bypass

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

To celebrate the start of National Obesity Week today, Walsall husband and wife Barry & Wendy Carpenter showed their equivalent 90kg loss to date in rubber tyres following their gastric bypass surgery, wearing their Vita Clinics National Obesity Week T Shirts! They felt that this would hopefully bring home an important message to people about the impact of obesity as well as the tranformational effects of weight loss surgery for those who have tried everything else to lose weight with no success and find themselves facing a miserable, ill and shorter life as a result of morbid obesity.

Wendy says “For years, weight has ruled and ruined our lives. At one point we weighed almost 50 stone between us. It got to the point where we were stared at in the street, couldn’t fit in seats at restaurants, were sick of paying extra for super size seats on aircraft, and couldn’t travel in friends’ cars because the seat belts were too small. We had tried so many diets. For every pound we lost we would several back on. We were just going backwards. We kept seeing stories about all of the terrible health risks associated with being overweight and we just reached the end of our tethers and got scared. It was time to do something about it for good.”

Barry underwent a gastric bypass in 2008 and has lost nearly10 stone. His operation has transformed his life, so Wendy decided to do something about her weight. She said there are so many things they wanted to do together, but their weight had restricted them. Since Barry has had his operation, he has been working for Vita Clinics as a taxi driver, taking patients to and from the airport, train station or bus stations. He has become quite a star – telling them all about his experiences and reassuring them about their treatment.

Wendy had been told she needed a gastric bypass by an NHS surgeon 3 years previously and had been on a waiting list. Seeing Barry’s life change, she knew she couldn’t wait any longer so she decided to get the money together and have her surgery with Vita Clinics. She says it’s the best thing she ever did – “I think the best thing about the surgery is that I have a long-term support plan, which will help me make the lifestyle changes that I need to make to succeed, as I know the surgery is not a magic cure on its own. Barry and I have been given the chance to start a new life. What more could anyone ask for?”

On Discovery Health TV tonight – Miracle of 3 sisters who had gastric bypass on same day in February 2009 – 22 stone lost!

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

If you tune into the ‘Discovery Home and Health’ TV channel at 9pm tonight, you will see the miraculous story of 3 sisters who had gastric bypass surgery on the same day at an NHS hospital in February this year and have since lost 22 stone. The sisters, Georgina, Sharon and Pauline Johnson from West Sussex, all had BMIs over 50. Their obesity put them at risk of Diabetes, heart disease and various cancers. Their stories are all different.

Pauline weighed over 20 stone most of her adult life, and states that she was addicted to food. She developed very high blood pressure (hypertension) putting her at great risk of heart attack or stroke – she has now stopped all her blood pressure drugs. She had tried Xenical [Orlistat] (a licensed weight loss drug) 3 years ago but it stopped working after a month, mainly because her “will to eat was stronger than my will to slim down”.

Pauline at present is suffering from hair loss and loose skin following surgery, but still says “I didn’t realise how much weight loss would make my entire world change… now, I never cook junk food. Not only have I lost weight, my son has lost a stone too and is now just right for his height. That was another motivation for me to sort myself out, because I would have been mortified if he’d had to have suffered in the way I did.”

Pauline and her partner are now trying for another baby after years of having no periods – they returned 2 months after the operation! “I have dreamed of having another baby for years but it was impossible when I was so big.”

Sharon identified that food had obesssed the sisters since they were children despite their father being slim and mother only occasionally being overweight. She says “Most of my childhood memories are of food: of cooking cakes with mum, of raiding the fridge when my parents were asleep.” She recalls that she never felt satisfied by a meal, adding that this was one of the reasons she was persuaded by a gastric bypass as it would finally make her feel full after eating. Sharon said the sisters’ surgery was her idea – “Pauline lives opposite a man who’d had it done and lost loads of weight. He inspired me to do it and to persuade my sisters.”

Sharon has recently picked up several infections possibly due to her changed nutritional state but has now come off anti-depressants she had been taking for 16 years and has been given the go-ahead for surgery to remove an inflamed fallopian tube, which couldn’t be carried out previously becuase of her weight.

Georgina, aged 37, was warned at the beginning of 2009 that unless she lost weight quickly she would be dead within 10 years because of the strain the weight was placing on her heart. She has since lost 6st 7lbs and within a month of the gastric bypass took her son to school for the first time in his life (she didn’t have the energy to do it before the weight loss surgery), adding “seeing his smiling face makles all this so worthwhile”. She is now considering returning to her former career as a care worker.

Ireland Obesity epidemic driving heart disease

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

A Leading Consultant Cardiologist in Northern Ireland has stated that the current escalting rates of obesity are storing up serious health problems for the future. Dr Carl Vaughan says that given that 60% of Irish adults and 25% of children are overweight or obese, there will be a huge burden of risk of heart disease, putting strain on the cardiology departments in Northern Ireland’s hospitals.

He feels that the current picture is just ‘the tip of the iceberg’ and that children present a real future issue. He said “There is an epidemic of childhood obesity, teenage obesity and adult obesity that’s driving diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and heart disease”.

Heart disease could once again become the biggest killer in Northern Ireland if obesity rates don’t start to be urgently addressed.

Vita Clinics has just been awarded a second contract from The Northern Ireland Health & Social Care Board for 50 Bariatric Surgery cases to be undertaken before the end of march 2010, having successfully delivered a first wave contract. With the first group of patients 100% of Diabetic and hypertensive patients have gone into ‘remission’ as a result of their weight loss after gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy obesity surgery. We are currently the only specialist weight management provider in Northern Ireland, running weight management clinics in Belfast and Ballykelly.
