National Obesity Week – Vita Clinics Birmingham goes ‘karumba’!

To round off National Obesity Week and our lively and fun campaign to support the work of The National Obesity Forum, staff and patients at Vita Clinics Birmingham Weight Management Clinic entered into a bit of Salsa on Friday 6th November.

The heat was on and the rhythm was rocking. Whether we were Brucie’s favourites was anyones’ guess! Nevertheless, we had great fun and it proved that being active can be great fun!

We hope that our activities across the week have really provoked ‘body mass imagination’ and broken down some the stigma that exercise and healthy living can be dull and daunting. We have hopefully shown that by incorporating a variety of activity and exercise is probably the best way to achieve long term weight control and a healthy lifestyle – the aim of National Obesity Week.

A huge thank you to our patients for their support, to members of the public for also joining in the spirit, and last but not least our devoted staff for doing what they believe in with passion! A big thank you to Jane Edmonds, Bariatric Dietician for helping me to pull the week together and coming up with some great ideas… you’re a marvel! Finally, a ‘big up’ to the team at The National Obesity Forum for their encouragement and support both leading up to this week and on a day-by-day basis… we hope you’ve had fun watching and feel that we’ve done a small part to help get some serious messages across.

National Obesity Week – Birmingham “Shakes, rattles and rolls!”

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Forget Strictly Come Dancing! To help celebrate National Obesity Week, on Thursday 5th November, staff and patients at The Vita Clinics’ Birmingham Weight Management Clinic helped Bonfire night go with a bang by launching into a variety of different activities under the banner of ’shake, rattle and roll’!

Never before have the staff been so active (!) and the patients definately felt that exercise could be great fun. Patients after bariatric surgery procedures such as gastric bypass and gastric band, as well as patients particpating in Vita Clinics’ Medical Weight Management programme, wanted to celebrate the fact that they had lost significant weight and felt healthier than they had done in years.

They aimed to row a total of 4 miles in relays. It takes the Oxford and Cambridge crews about 17 minutes to complete the 4 miles from Putney to Mortlake – everyone felt they could take a little longer for our 4 mile challenge (we didn’t want the Cambridge and Oxford crews to feel too threatened!).

Several patients got stuck in with gusto, having successfully undergone weight loss surgery such as gastric bypass and gastric band earlier in the year, and now being several stone lighter. The river was a bit choppy in places and the weather not too good on occasion…

Some of the staff felt the current was against them, with one or two claiming they were rowing against the tide, and Carol, Bariatric Nurse Specialist, claiming that she’d only managed to “row up the cut” (a Walsall phrase we think).

Great fun was had by all and we estimate that well over 1,500 calories were burned.

For most of the participants this was the first time they had used a rower and several said they enjoyed it so much they would seriously contemplate investing in one to help them get fitter and become more active. To found out some enjoyable and easy steps for activity and exercise click here.

We haven’t yet decided about charging for training the Oxford or Cambridge crews…. our expert technique comes at a price!

National Obesity Week – Vita Clinics Birmingham Weight Management Clinic ‘in a spin’!

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

As part of celebrating the National Obesity Week campaign, Vita Clinics staff and patients at the Birmingham weight management clinic went “into a spin” and collectively undertook a 29 mile static cycle race wearing their National Obesity Week T Shirts in support of the National Obesity Forum.

Despite weary limbs and fast-ticking hearts, fun was had by all. The aim was to show that exercise can be fun and enjoyable, as well as getting the message across that obesity is a serious problem and that only by healthy eating and exercise can it be tackled. Some of the patients had undergone weight loss surgery (gastric band/gastric bypass) earlier in the year, whilst other patients were nearing the end of Vita Clinics’ Medical Weight Management programme and celebrating their success at significant weight loss and improved health.

The joy of using an exercise bike is that there are no traffic dangers and it can be done in the comfort of your own home watching TV or listening to your favourite music! We collectively burned over 2,600 and had fun too!

Vita Clinics running campaign to support NOF National Obesity Week 2nd-8th November

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

New NOW Logo

The 2009 National Obesity Week campaign is running from 2nd – 8th November and is entitled “DO YOU HAVE BODY MASS IMAGINATION?”

In light of the worsening obesity epidemic, we want to encourage people to think about their weight and to understand that obesity is a problem that can affect anybody. People often underestimate their weight, and we wish to get across the message that being overweight is a health issue and not just an issue of vanity.

Vita Clinics is working in partnership with The National Obesity Forum to get this message across. Most people do not know their Body Mass Index and its impact on their health risks such as type 2 Diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), heart disease and some cancers. Obesity is now unfortunately common and increasing especially among young people.

During National Obesity Week both staff and patients from some of our clinics will be wearing their NOW T-shirts and getting more active to use more calories and improve fitness after weight loss. We will be working with a variety of exercise challenges and having fun too. Exercise improves cardiovascular health and it also improves wellbeing and confidence. Many people who have been overweight for years find it a challenge to join a gym.

We have just published a set of post-Bariatric Surgery recipes in conjunction with the NOF (for patients after gastric band or gastric bypass surgery) to support National Obesity Week. Other activities for the week include a static cycle relay (“getting in a spin”), Vibro plate & Rebounding (“Shake, rattle & roll”), Rowing (“The boat race”), Salsa Dancing and more. The key message for these activities is that exercise and physical activity are helpful in weight loss/toning and much more enjoyable as you lose weight.

Monday 2nd November – “Burn rubber” with Walsall-based husband & wife Barry & Wendy Carpenter who both had Gastric Bypass (follow Wendy’s video diary). They will be piling up spare tyres at a local garage to reflect the weight they have lost from their own spare tyres to date! They are both great examples of the profound effect obesity surgery can have on health and quality of life.

Belfast – On Monday 2nd November, we will be searching for 8 ‘lost’ people in Northern Ireland.

Don’t be alarmed though……. What we really mean is that Vita Clinics, providers of weight loss surgery in Northern Ireland, have helped individuals referred to their service to lose the equivalent weight of 8 people or a staggering 524.7 kg (1155 pounds or 82 ½ stones) over the last 8 months!

Many of these patients will be appearing with clothes they used to wear before their obesity surgery (in most cases gastric bypass) at our Belfast Vita Weight Management Clinic between 9am-4pm and talking about the miraculous changes in their life and health as a result of their weight loss in 2009!

Tuesday 3rd November - Staff and patients at The Birmingham Vita Weight Management Clinic will be “in a spin!” between 10am-3pm. There will be a static cycle relay…. how far can we cycle individually and collectively, how many calories can we use?

Wednesday 4th November – Staff and patients at The Birmingham Vita Weight Management Clinic will be rowing The Boat Race aiming to row a total of 4 miles between 10am-3pm (!) in relays. It takes the Oxford and Cambridge crews about 17 minutes to complete the 4 miles from Putney to Mortlake – we can take a little longer for our 4 mile challenge. We will be using a static rowing machine so lifejackets not required!

LondonHala El-Shafie, Vita Clinics Dietician Adviser who also runs the Harley Nutrition Clinic links up with Personal Trainer Esther Brienza of Obesity Matters TV to raise awareness of National Obesity Week and the importance of understanding the consequences of being overweight.

We’ll be bouncing in ‘boingy boots’ around Battersea Park between 12-2pm to prove that health and fitness is fun for all shapes and sizes. Weight management can be achieved in tiny steps one at a time or in great leaps and bounds for those who put a mind to it! We’ll be joined by Jay Hunt, BBC presenter who herself had a successful gastric bypass operation in 2008.

We can measure anyone’s BMI for them whilst there and take waist measurements. We’ll be there to point people in the right direction for finding help or further information as well as advise on the small steps that they can take at work or at home to help combat the obeso-genic environment.

Thursday 5th November – Staff and patients at The Birmingham Vita Weight Management Clinic will be doing a real mixture of “shake, rattle and roll” – between 10am and 3pm we will have exercise DVDs, a vibrating plate and a rebound/bouncer to try to use up more calories and definately make bonfire night go with a bang! Come and join us……….

Friday 6th November – If we’re still standing…. Staff and patients at The Birmingham Vita Weight Management Clinic will be rounding off the week with a Salsa exercise class (led by our Dietician Annmarie Field, a bit of a salsa expert!) from 4-5pm. Anyone interested can join us… contact us for more information……..

If you would like to find out more of what we are up to during this high profile week and even want to get involved (you don’t have to be a Vita Clinics patient – you just want to share your weight loss success to motivate and encourage others!) contact us for information. One thing’s for sure – we want it to be fun!

On Discovery Health TV tonight – Miracle of 3 sisters who had gastric bypass on same day in February 2009 – 22 stone lost!

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

If you tune into the ‘Discovery Home and Health’ TV channel at 9pm tonight, you will see the miraculous story of 3 sisters who had gastric bypass surgery on the same day at an NHS hospital in February this year and have since lost 22 stone. The sisters, Georgina, Sharon and Pauline Johnson from West Sussex, all had BMIs over 50. Their obesity put them at risk of Diabetes, heart disease and various cancers. Their stories are all different.

The sisters before gastric bypass surgery

The sisters before gastric bypass surgery

Pauline weighed over 20 stone most of her adult life, and states that she was addicted to food. She developed very high blood pressure (hypertension) putting her at great risk of heart attack or stroke – she has now stopped all her blood pressure drugs. She had tried Xenical [Orlistat] (a licensed weight loss drug) 3 years ago but it stopped working after a month, mainly because her “will to eat was stronger than my will to slim down”.

Pauline at present is suffering from hair loss and loose skin following surgery, but still says “I didn’t realise how much weight loss would make my entire world change… now, I never cook junk food. Not only have I lost weight, my son has lost a stone too and is now just right for his height. That was another motivation for me to sort myself out, because I would have been mortified if he’d had to have suffered in the way I did.”

Pauline and her partner are now trying for another baby after years of having no periods – they returned 2 months after the operation! “I have dreamed of having another baby for years but it was impossible when I was so big.”

Sharon identified that food had obesssed the sisters since they were children despite their father being slim and mother only occasionally being overweight. She says “Most of my childhood memories are of food: of cooking cakes with mum, of raiding the fridge when my parents were asleep.” She recalls that she never felt satisfied by a meal, adding that this was one of the reasons she was persuaded by a gastric bypass as it would finally make her feel full after eating. Sharon said the sisters’ surgery was her idea – “Pauline lives opposite a man who’d had it done and lost loads of weight. He inspired me to do it and to persuade my sisters.”

Sharon has recently picked up several infections possibly due to her changed nutritional state but has now come off anti-depressants she had been taking for 16 years and has been given the go-ahead for surgery to remove an inflamed fallopian tube, which couldn’t be carried out previously becuase of her weight.

Georgina, aged 37, was warned at the beginning of 2009 that unless she lost weight quickly she would be dead within 10 years because of the strain the weight was placing on her heart. She has since lost 6st 7lbs and within a month of the gastric bypass took her son to school for the first time in his life (she didn’t have the energy to do it before the weight loss surgery), adding “seeing his smiling face makles all this so worthwhile”. She is now considering returning to her former career as a care worker.
