How much weight will I lose after weight loss surgery?
Bariatric surgery for people with morbid obesity is associated with significant weight loss that is maintained for at least 8 years, whereas there is little sustained weight loss with conventional treatment in this group of patients. Surgery is also associated with improved quality of life and reduced co-morbidities (illnesses associated with being overweight).
Bariatric surgery can help people lose 60% of their excess weight improving their overall health and general well being which can prolong their life by up to 9 years.
Bariatric surgery can transform health status - studies have shown that Diabetes was completely resolved in 77% of patients and resolved or improved in 86%. High blood fat levels were reduced in 70%, and high blood pressure resolved in 62%.
When compared with conventional treatment, bariatric surgery has been shown to result in a significantly greater loss of weight (23 – 37 kg more weight), which was maintained at 8 years. As a consequence, there were improvements in quality of life and co-morbidities associated with the loss of weight from weight loss surgery.
Comparison of the different types of surgery showed that gastric bypass appeared more beneficial, with a greater weight loss (6 –14 kg more weight) and/or improvements in co-morbidities and complications than either gastroplasty or jejunoileal bypass.
In a recent study published last year looking at both gastric banding and gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) the following results were found.
This paper looked at 15 studies internationally comparing laparoscopic gastric banding and gastric bypass. It found that after one year people with a lap band lost on average 48% of their excess body weight, while people who had a gastric bypass lost on average 76% of their excess weight. Excess weight is the amount of weight that you would need to lose to become a healthy weight. In other words, the weight you would be to have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25.
The paper also looked at the effect of the weight loss surgery on diabetes. People who had gastric bypass and diabetes, for 78% of them, the weight loss surgery resolved their diabetes. The people who had gastric banding and had diabetes, 48% of them had resolution of their diabetes.
Therefore, weight loss surgery or bariatric (meaning ‘heavy’ in Greek) surgery as it is also known, helps people become lighter and healthier.
