Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is the term used to describe obesity surgery (also known as weight loss surgery). Vita Clinics offers a range of surgical bariatric operations aimed towards weight reduction using a team of expert Bariatric surgeons. Bariatric surgery itself will not lead to long term weight loss – this can only be achieved with changing eating habits and diet, another key feature of our weight management programmes.

Bariatric surgery works in two main ways:

  • Reducing the size of the stomach, meaning you feel full quicker
  • Affecting the way in which food is absorbed through the small intestine (less calories absorbed)

The four most common stomach surgery procedures for the treatment of obesity are:

The gastric bypass operation carries the best chance of weight loss in the longer term whilst gastric banding has a quicker weight loss initially and is technically ‘reversible’ (although it should be seen as a life long operation in most cases). The sleeve gastrectomy operation can benefit those patients who are larger or have bowel diseases such as Crohn’s.

Any type of bariatric surgery operation requires careful assessment by an expert team and long term follow-up in a bariatric surgery clinic to reduce possible complications and more importantly get the best possible results. Bariatric operations have been shown to cure over 70% of patients suffering from diabetes (type 2), high blood pressure (hypertension) and sleep apnoea where these have developed as a result of their obesity.
