Shahrad Taheri Dr Shahrad Taheri – Consultant Bariatric Physician, Birmingham

Dr Taheri is Lead Consultant Bariatric Physician at Heart Of England NHS Foundation Trust Bariatric Unit at Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham. He runs a large obesity clinic comprising a full multi-disciplinary team. He also co-directs a research unit that carries out studies in the fields of lifestyle, obesity, sleep and metabolism in conjunction with The University of Birmingham. He is a leading member of most Obesity Forums and Committees across the Midlands.

Dr Taheri will provide Physician input to The Birmingham Vita Clinic in terms of leading our Medical Weight Management Plan as well as assessing patients with active/significant co-morbidity both before and after bariatric surgery.


Dev Banerjee Dr Dev Banerjee – Consultant Respiratory & Sleep Physician, Birmingham

Dr Banerjee provides support to Vita Clinics by seeing patients deemed at risk of sleep apnoea at several of our clinics. He undertakes diagnosis and assessment , initiating a complete treatment where required both before and after surgery.

Dr Dev Banerjee is the lead Consultant for sleep medicine at the Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Heart of England Foundation NHS Trust. He is regarded as a national sleep expert providing guidance on road safety and sleepiness, working closely with the lorry and train industries. He has spent time working at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, University of Sydney, Australia where he underwent formal training in sleep physiology, sleep apnoea, narcolepsy and insomnia, undergoing research particularly studying the effects of obesity on sleep apnoea.

He came back to the Birmingham Heartlands Hospital in March 2004 to take up post as Head of the Sleep unit, which sees up to 700 new patients in the NHS per year, with over 200 patients set up on CPAP(Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) per year. The Birmingham Heartlands Hospital currently has over 1000 patients on CPAP on its books.


Shuvro Roy-Choudhury Dr Shuvro Roy-Choudhury – Consultant Abdominal Radiologist, Birmingham

Dr Shuvro Roy-Choudhury, FRCS (London), FRCR, is a Consultant Abdominal Radiologist at the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust.

Trained in Yorkshire and London, his main area of work is Body imaging and Intervention. His special interests include advanced CT applications like CT Colonography and Urography, image guided tumour ablation and pelvic MRI for cancer and pelvic floor. He has presented, lectured and published widely on various topics related to abdominal radiology and intervention. He has been involved in the radiology of obesity surgery since 1999 and has published two peer reviewed articles on the subject.

He works with several bariatric teams and performs radiological assessments of laparoscopic bands, laparoscopic bypasses and related complications both in the NHS and privately. He is a co-author of an upcoming text book chapter on the topic of Laparoscopic banding and bypasses as well as an invited author on this topic by the American Journal of Gastroenterology.

 

Dr Umesh Udeshi - Consultant Radiologist, Birmingham

Dr Udeshi is an experienced Consultant Bariatric Radiologist and also Clinical Director for Radiology at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust

Trained in Wales, his main area of work is Body imaging and Intervention. His special interests include advanced CT Colonography and Urography, and he is lead Radiologist for urological and haematological cancers. He has been involved in bariatric radiology since 2005, regularly carrying out guided gastric band assessments, fills and aspirations, as well as barium assessments post band insertions in the NHS and private sector.

 

Dr Andrew Hartland - Consultant Bariatric Physician, Birmingham

Dr Hartland is the lead Consultant Bariatric Physician at the Walsall NHS Bariatric Unit. 

He has been involved in Bariatric services for over 5 years, having been instrumental in establishing the obesity service at Walsall Manor Hospital, and has an immense amount of clincial experience in specialist weight management as a result. He is also the Chairman of the West Midlands region for The National Obesity Forum.

Dr Hartland provides Physician input to The Birmingham Vita Clinic in terms of leading our Medical Weight Management Plan as well as assessing patients with active/significant co-morbidity both before and after bariatric surgery.

 

Dr Aresh Anwar - Consultant Bariatric Physician, Birmingham

DrAnwar is a Consultant Bariatric Physician at University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust and is the Clinical Director for Medicine.

He has been involved in Bariatric services for over a decade, having established the initial obesity service at Heartlands Hospital Birmingham, and has a wealth of clincial experience as a consequence. His research in this field has been on the association between steriods and weight. He trained in London, Edinburgh and Birmingham.

Dr Anwar provides Physician input to The Birmingham Vita Clinic in terms of leading our Medical Weight Management Plan as well as assessing patients with active/significant co-morbidity both before and after bariatric surgery.

Dr Parijat De - Consultant Endocrinologist, Birmingham

Dr De is a Consultant Physician in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Lipid Metabolism at City Hospital (Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust), Birmingham. He sees patients in our Metabolic Clinic.

He has a wide interest and expertise in all aspects of Endocrinology and Diabetes, especially in the field of metabolic syndrome. His special interest is Obesity related to all endocrinological diseases as well as the growing problems of type 2 Diabetes. He has published widely in this field and pursues an active research interest. He has set up various community based diabetes clinics in Birmingham, which are amongst the first in the country.

 

Dr Biswa Mishra - Bariatric Consultant Physician, Manchester

Dr Mishra has been a Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetologist with a sub-specialist interest in morbid obesity at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust since 2006. He regularly runs obesity clinics comprising a full multi-disciplinary team at his NHS base in Rochdale.

Dr Mishra provides Physician input to The Manchester Vita Clinic in terms of leading our Medical Weight Managment Plan as well as assessing patients with active/significant co-morbidity both before and after bariatric surgery.
 

 

Dr Arunachalam Swayamprakasam - Lead Bariatric Consultant Anaesthetist, Manchester

Dr Swayamprakasam has been a Consultant Anaesthetist at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust since 1999.

He has had extensive bariatric experience, anaesthetising regularly in the private sector for both Mr Akhtar and Mr Senapati over the last 2 years for both Gastric Bands and Gastric Bypasses on morbidly/super obese patients with significant co-morbidity.

He is skilled with the management of difficult airways, is proficient in fibre-optic intubation and regularly provides intensivist input on the critical care unit in the NHS.

 

Dr Ken Uzoka - Bariatric Consultant Radiologist, Manchester

Dr Ken Uzoka is a Consultant Diagnostic and Interventional Radiologist at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
